Program Description

The Surrey Neighbouring Faiths Program is a free, multifaith program for families of children aged 4-6 years. The Program encourages children to value their own cultural, ethnic, and religious identities. Further, it offers experiences for children to learn to respect and appreciate other peoples’ identities, and to feel a sense of belonging in the broader community. The program welcomes participants from all religious backgrounds, as well as those with no religious affiliation

The program consists of 8-10 sessions. The dates and times of the sessions may vary depending on the availability of volunteers and host communities. The first session is a general orientation and planning session to ensure that the program meets the needs and interests of the group. 7-9 sessions are then devoted to visiting a selection of faith communities in Surrey.

Visits to Local Faith Communities:

Visits to local faith communities are lead by a member of that community. Sessions are 1 to 2 hours long and are geared towards the developmental level of 4-6 year old preschool and early elementary school children.

Visits include a tour of the building and introductions to other members of the community. Children participate in songs, hymns, stories, games or crafts related to the faith tradition, and parents are given opportunities to ask questions as well.

The content of each session introduces children and families to basic beliefs or practices of the faith community. The activities are intended to educate and inspire, not to convert, convince or present a particular faith as superior to others.

Parent Participation:

Parents are required to supervise their children at all times during this program and are responsible for all transportation.
